How to Prevent Fungal Infection

One of the most common issues I help clients with is fungal infections—whether it’s athlete’s foot or fungal toenails. These conditions are more than just a cosmetic concern, they can cause discomfort, affect your confidence, and if left untreated, lead to bigger health problems.

The good news? Fungal infections are highly preventable. Here are some simple but important habits you can adopt to protect your feet.

Keep your feet dry

Fungi love warm, damp environments. Always dry your feet thoroughly after bathing, especially between the toes. If your feet sweat a lot during the day, consider changing socks or using an antifungal foot powder to keep moisture under control.

Choose the right shoes

Footwear matters more than most people realise. Avoid wearing the same pair every day, and opt for breathable materials like leather or mesh. Make sure shoes are well-fitted and dry. Fungus can thrive in shoes that stay damp inside.

Change socks daily

Always wear clean socks and consider moisture-wicking materials if you’re on your feet a lot or live in a humid climate. This one small habit can go a long way in preventing fungal growth.

Protect your feet in shared spaces

Gyms, pools, and communal showers are hotspots for fungus. Always wear flip-flops or shower shoes when walking in these areas to protect your feet.

Keep tools and shoes personal

Never share nail clippers, pumice stones, or footwear. Even socks and slippers should be kept personal. If you visit a nail salon, make sure their tools are properly sterilised.

Watch for early warning signs

Itching, peeling, white patches between toes, thick or discolored nails—these can be early signs of a fungal infection. The sooner it’s treated, the easier it is to manage.

As a foot health practitioner, I see firsthand how a little attention can prevent a lot of discomfort. Your feet carry you every day, they deserve your care and attention. If you’ve noticed changes in your feet or toenails, or just want expert advice on keeping them healthy, I’d be happy to help. Prevention is always better than cure.
